MISSION STATEMENT

CES strives to promote a lifelong love of reading, learning, and literacy.

Read Across America 2026

Key Strategies to Promote Reading:

  • Establish a Routine: Make reading a part of every day, such as a bedtime story ritual.
  • Be a Role Model: Let your children see you reading books, magazines, or newspapers.
  • Create a Reading-Friendly Environment: Set up a quiet, cozy, and comfortable spot for reading. Keep books in easily accessible, child-friendly places like baskets or shelves.
  • Make Reading Interactive: Use different voices for characters, make sound effects, and ask questions about the story.
  • Let Them Choose: Allow children to select their own books to encourage ownership and interest.
  • Visit the Library: Make regular trips to the library to discover new books and attend events.
  • Diversify Material: Offer magazines, comics, graphic novels, and audiobooks to appeal to different interests and reading levels.
  • Incorporate Reading into Daily Life: Read environmental text like street signs, cereal boxes, and recipes.
  • Limit Screen Time: Reduce television and device usage to create more time for reading.
  • Start Early: Begin reading to children even as infants to build early literacy skills.
